Visiting Professor James Moore presents "Darwin's Sacred Cause: How a Hatred of Slavery Shaped Darwin's Views on Evolution." Based on Moore's critically acclaimed book, Darwin's Sacred Cause: Race, Slavery and the Quest for Human Origins, co-authored with Adrian Desmond, Professor Moore will describe the manuscripts, unpublished family correspondence, notebooks, diaries, and even ships' logs that show that abolitionism had deep roots in Darwin's family and that his hatred of slavery was reinforced by his voyage on the Beagle as well as by events in America.  This event is sponsored by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies Crossing the Social/Biological Divide Working Group.
