Triangle Club Meeting with Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton
The Triangle Club welcomes Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton. Mayor Throgmorton is currently serving his third term on Iowa City’s City Council. He first served on our city council from late 1993 through 1995; he was re-elected in 2011 and in 2015. He became mayor in January 2016.
Mayor Throgmorton earned a B.A. in history from University of Notre Dame, an M.S. in Community Development from University of Louisville, and a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from The University of California, Los Angeles. He has lived in Iowa City since 1986, teaching in The University of Iowa’s School of Urban and Regional Planning for 24 years, and retiring as an Emeritus Professor in 2010. His teaching and research interests focused on planning theory, the history of urban and regional planning, planning for sustainable places, and innovative approaches to resolving conflicts. Mayor Throgmorton is best known for his work concerning the role of persuasive storytelling in planning and city crafting. He has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Western Europe, and likes to read, hike, bike, and explore cities and natural areas.
Mayor Throgmorton continues to vigorously lead efforts to foster a more inclusive, just, and sustainable city. His specific priorities as mayor have included: improving the affordability of housing, especially for low-to-moderate income residents; improving racial equity; producing a more walkable city; and taking effective local action to ameliorate the threat of global climate change.
Mayor Throgmorton is married to Professor Barbara Eckstein (UI Department of English). Daughter Zoe Eckstein is a freshman at UI. He has two sons, Patrick and Paul, and a granddaughter, Madeline.
