"What are the Humanities For - In the 21st Century?" A talk by Christopher Newfield

Christopher Newfield is Professor of English and American Studies and a member of the X-IRG research group at the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  As author of the ground-breaking book of higher education and policy, Unmaking the Public University:  The Forty-Year Assault on the Middle Class (2008), he helped launch the field of Critical University Studies.  Newfield's research extends beyond the politics and economics of higher education to civil rights history, the future of the middle classes, race and gender dynamics, renewable energy, technology, and the media life of nanotechnology.  An energetic public intellectual, he publishes regularly in the blogosphere for Remaking the University and The Huffington Post.  A reception will follow Professor Newfield's talk at the Prairie Lights Times Club (5:30-7:00pm).  This talk is part of the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies Designing the Future series.
