Abby Haywood is a master’s student in music education. She received her B.A. in Music from Meredith College and a certificate in Music Therapy from Marylhurst University. Prior to entering the University of Iowa, Abby taught K-12 general music and elementary band and chorus in public schools in Vermont, Illinois and Kentucky. From these experiences she has gained a strong belief that “how” you teach effects “whom” you inspire. She is committed to rethinking music education and asks “how is it that the population of students that we teach continues to change and yet music education as a profession continues to draw the same type of teachers?” To address this question Abby’s research interest is in developing a music education curriculum that moves nearer to cultural studies.
