Dr. Dan Berkowitz's research interests focus on social and cultural approaches to the study of news, especially news narratives, collective memory, and the media/terrorism interface. He teaches public relations, sociology of news, and media & terrorism. He was director of research and communication at Associated Oregon Loggers; information representative for the Department of Environmental Quality in Eugene, OR.; public information specialist at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield, OR.; and a public relations consultant and freelance writer. He also worked as a DJ and community affairs director at KATA-AM, Arcata, CA. Dr. Berkowitz joined the Iowa faculty in 1988. He has served as Associate Dean for Student & Administrative Affairs in the University of Iowa Graduate College since 2007. He holds a BS in forest resource management, an MS in journalism, and a PhD in mass communications.
