Laurel Fantauzzo is a third-year Master of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program. She has written for Lapham’s Quarterly, Grantland, The FilAm, Associated Press, New York Magazine online, Good Housekeeping, and GMA News. She was a 2011 Fulbright scholar to the Philippines, and in October 2012 she earned a Philippine American Press Club Award for an essay on forming a relationship to the city of Manila. Her nonfiction thesis, The First Impulse, examines the unsolved murders of two young film journalists in the Philippines. Her research concerns include LGBTQ issues, Philippine independent cinema and food culture, and mixed identity. At the Institute, she will work to engage and publicize modern, long-form nonfiction writing for a Philippine American audience.
