Maylan Thomas is a native Iowan from Cedar Rapids. After pursing an AA in theatre from Kirkwood, he left home in 1999 for a career with the US Army. While in the Army, he witnessed the crippling of a nation from the 9/11 attacks and the pursuant wars that came from this event. While stationed in Washington, D.C. as a Technical Director attached to the Army Entertainment Division (2004-2007), he supported celebrity events and visits that took place in Walter Reed Army Hospital and Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he was particularly moved by the burn units at both facilities. After leaving the Army in 2007, Maylan attended the University of Iowa to complete his BA in Theatre Production Design and is currently in his last semester of study toward completing his MFA in Scenic and Lighting Design. After coming to terms with his military experience through his exploration of his craft, he realized that there are a multitude of veterans who are struggling with their experiences as well. He believes that by examining these formative events though means of expression in both the fine arts and the written word one may come to a more complete understanding of the person that each one is.
