stef shuster is a PhD student in Sociology and trans-activist in the Iowa City community. stef's research interests include gender, sexuality, organizations, and social movements with a critical analytical and pedagogical stance toward the intersections of gender and other forms of oppression. This approach to oppression and power structures allows for a firm foundation in queer and feminist theories and building bridges between their academic work in Sociology and theoretical orientation. stef is also a photographer and would like to integrate photography with their research in order to help bring knowledge to a broader medium than ‘just’ academic discourse. Currently, stef is working on their dissertation and recently returned from field research in a Midwestern metropolitan area for their research on trans communities. Through the Graduate Institute, stef is planning on further developing social justice programs that are already in motion for transgender communities in the Iowa City area.
