Stephen Berry is an associate professor in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication. He is working on a book, "The Road to Little Rock: Harry Scott Ashmore and Liberalism in Dixie" that examines Ashmore's evolvement into the nationally known liberal southern editor of the Arkansas Gazette. He won the Pulitzer Prize for editorials against segregationist Governor Orval Faubus' effort  to block the desegregation of Central High School in 1957 in defiance of the Supreme Court's pivotal Brown decision. Because the liberalism of gradualism he and other southern liberal editors espoused drew outrage from the racist right and the impatient left, the book will investigate Ashmore's role in Little Rock and impact on racial justice.
