Lecture on Verdi's "La Fanciulla del West"

On Thursday, March 9, Cody Norling (UI School of Music) will give a research talk on Verdi’s La Fanciulla del West at 5:30 p.m. in 2520D UCC. The talk will address American Indian depictions in Puccini’s Gold Rush drama, La Fanciulla del West. In doing so, he will highlights the opera’s two indigenous characters, Wowkle and Billy Jackrabbit, and compare their portrayal to the setting’s historical realities. 

Opera Studies Forum is presenting an exciting lineup of topics on Opera from the 18th-century divas to the 20th-century operas Rusalka and La Fanciulla del West. The first two talks on Feb. 2 and 23 will take place in the brand new Voxman Music Building on Burlington and Clinton Streets. The lectures on March 9, March 23, and April 20 take place in the usual venue at University Capitol Center 2520D.
