Internship: United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties

Project Description: Reimagining social services in Johnson County

The United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties’ mission is to improve lives by uniting the caring power of the community. We focus on local change. We invest, collaborate, and convene to bring real change to our communities. The UWJWC harnesses the collective impact of twenty-nine local nonprofit partners to focus on specific, measurable goals and improve the lives of everyone in education, financial stability, and access to healthcare.

Working with the President and CEO the intern will assist with research, writing, and coordination of the Better Together 2030 Pillar 5 project, “Reimaged Human and Social Services.” The intern will be asked to research new models, communicate best practices, and convene groups to develop action plans.  

Intern’s work responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Research relevant programs and initiatives

  • Meet with community groups and learn about their needs, priorities, and existing work 

  • Draft press releases, blog posts, newsletter text, and social media posts that inform our community and elected officials on the need for policy to address specific issues 

  • Assist in organizing events to gain feedback, build community, and form coalitions 

  • Plan and coordinate circles, meetings, and events to move the initiative forward 

Qualifications & skills preferred: 

  • Excellent communication and writing skills 

  • Strong organizational abilities 

  • Interest in local and state policy and how it intersects with business 

  • Ability to work professionally with members, community leaders, elected officials, and candidates for public office  

  • Ability to work independently, including effective time management, attention to detail, and being deadline sensitive
