Obermann International Fellows FAQ
Essentials
How will I receive my $2,000 reimbursement for travel and lodging?
You will need to submit all of your receipts to the Obermann Center's Director of Operations by the end of your fellowship. She will then submit them to the University, and you will receive your reimbursement via direct deposit or check mailed to your home address within 3–4 weeks. Note that you cannot receive reimbursements until your fellowship ends.
What is the English proficiency requirement?
Effective January 5th, 2015, all scholars are required to demonstrate English proficiency before a scholar can be invited to the United States. This new restriction is dictated by the U.S. Department of State. English proficiency can be proven in one of three ways: 1) through a recognized English language test (TOEFL or IELTS); 2) through signed documentation from an academic institution or English language school; or 3) through an interview conducted by the sponsor (in this case, the UI Obermann Center for Advanced Studies).
Can my partner/family come with me?
Yes, but the Obermann Center cannot assist with their visa application(s), health insurance, or other matters.
Can I come during the summer?
No. This program prioritizes scholarly exchange with Obermann International Fellows and University of Iowa researchers; thus, the start and end dates of the fellowship must fall within a Fall or Spring UI semester, when UI faculty are on campus. For opening and closing dates of UI semesters, please see this calendar.
Can I take a course while at the University of Iowa?
Yes, but not for the purpose of seeking a degree. The Obermann Center cannot pay for or reimburse J-1 scholars for coursework.
Visas
Can I come to the U.S. for this program on an F-1, B-1, or B-2 visa?
No. J-1 visas are required.
Am I eligible for the program if I'm already in the U.S. on a J-1 visa?
Possibly. Please email us at obermann-center@uiowa.edu before applying to discuss this.
How long will it take me to get a J-1 visa, once I receive the letter of introduction and DS-2019 from the Obermann Center?
This depends on several factors, particularly the operating status and capacity of the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country. Most people receive their visas within 4 months.
Living in Iowa City
Where will I live?
International scholars may live on- or off-campus. On-campus housing may be available in Mayflower Hall; see here for details regarding amenities. One of the forms you'll complete as part of your visa paperwork will ask if you'd like to stay in Mayflower during your fellowship. If you mark "yes," the university's International Student and Scholar Services office will send you a housing application. We encourage you to submit this application as soon as possible, as dormitory space is limited.
Scholars preferring off-campus housing often rent extended-stay Airbnbs, stay in hotels, or sublet an apartment. Try searching for apartments through University of Iowa Off-Campus Housing, Facebook, and Craigslist. The Element Iowa City Hotel offers discounted extended stay rates; interested parties can contact Paige Klein (pklein@kinseth.com) for rates based on the number of nights they are looking for. See here for more off-campus housing resources.
Please note that the Obermann Center does not have adequate staff to help visiting foreign scholars find a place to live. You are responsible for finding your own housing, though staff can connect you with resources.
How will I get around Iowa City?
Iowa City has several bus systems, and many people drive or bike as well. The "Cambus" (campus bus) is a free and easy way to travel throughout campus and the immediately surrounding area. For those who enjoy biking, the Bike Library is an affordable option for short-term bike rental. Rideshare services are also available through Uber and Lyft. See here for more information about traveling around Iowa City.
How will I get to and from the airport?
You can take an Uber, Lyft, taxi, or shuttle to the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids (CID) at any time. However, after 9:00 p.m., Ubers stop departing from the Eastern Iowa Airport. If you arrive after 9:00 p.m., you will need to use a shuttle or taxi service to get to Iowa City. Anaman Concierge Services is a reliable shuttle service that serves Iowa City and surrounding areas. Book online in advance.
Will I receive health insurance?
Yes; you will receive University of Iowa health insurance coverage for the duration of the fellowship.
Where can I get healthcare?
University of Iowa Healthcare offers services including scheduled routine visits, specialty clinics, walk-in clinics, and urgent care. In the event of an emergency, the University of Iowa Hospital operates an emergency room and many specialized care units. All of these facilities are available on campus.
To pick up prescription or over-the-counter medications, many pharmacies are available throughout the city, including a CVS Pharmacy on campus.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911.
What is the weather like in Iowa City?
During late spring, summer, and early fall, Iowa is known for hot and humid weather. During winter, ice, snow, and cold wind are common. To stay warm and safe during cold weather:
- Wear several layers of clothing, and choose clothing that has been designed for cold weather. Natural fibers are often the warmest. Leave as few areas of the body exposed as possible.
- Allow extra time to get where you're going. Drive slowly; try to avoid abruptly turning or breaking. Watch for ice on the road, and keep in mind that accidents may be more frequent.
- Additionally, watch for ice on the sidewalk. It may be hard to see. When in doubt, walk on fresh snow where possible. Choose low, rough-soled footwear to help maintain your grip.
- Your skin and lips may dry out. Try carrying ChapStick and hand lotion with you.
- At all times, remember that temperatures can change quickly in Iowa. Check a weather app regularly, at least once a day.
