The Humanities for the Public Good program welcomes its second cohort of summer interns. The interns, who earn $5,000 for their eight weeks in the field, will work with organizations in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor on specific projects that range from oral history recording and archiving to curriculum development. In addition to their time at the job site, interns will meet regularly as a cohort to develop professionalizing skills and reflect on their experiences. 

The internships are part of the University of Iowa's four-year grant funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Humanities for the Public Good: An Integrative, Collaborative, Practice-Based Humanities PhD. The grant is focused on creating practice-based, cross-disciplinary opportunities for humanities graduate students interested in diverse careers. The internships are intended to help humanities and humanities-adjacent PhD students gain experiential knowledge about careers outside the academy. 

The following students have been selected for internship positions at five local job sites:

• Laura Hayes (English) – Education Associate, National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library
• Matthew Helm (English) – Rural Communities Culture and Culinary Traditions Intern, Iowa Valley Resource Conservation & Development (IVRCD)
• Jonathan Lack (Cinematic Arts) – Storytelling and the Food System, IVRCD
• Jennifer Miller (Language, Literacy, and Culture) – Exhibit Oral History and Community Outreach Intern, African American Museum of Iowa
• Cody Norling (Music) – Community Engagement Liaison, Hancher Auditorium
• Emily Wieder (French and Italian) – Audience Development and Student Engagement Intern, Hancher Auditorium
