Obermann Center for Advanced Studies

The UI’s Obermann Center for Advanced Studies serves the research mission of the University of Iowa. The Center is a convening space dedicated to debate and discovery. Its grants for University of Iowa artists and researchers support imaginative collaborations and multi-disciplinary exploration. Its programming connects scholars across campus and engages the larger public in the ambitious, illuminating, and transformative work of the artists and scholars it serves.

The purpose of the annual Obermann Symposium is to explore an important topic that highlights UI scholars and scholarship and includes both UI and visiting participants.

Tippie College of Business

The Tippie Department of Business Analytics offers experts in data science, social network analysis, machine learning, optimization, statistics, transportation, operations management, and supply chain management. While faculty focus on their individual areas of specialty when conducting research, they bring that knowledge to life in the classroom. In fact, Tippie's Business Analytics faculty was awarded the prestigious UPS George D. Smith Prize for excellence in preparing students for careers in analytics.

The University of Iowa Department of Urology is a worldwide leader in urologic care, research, and education and one of the oldest academic urology departments in the nation.The department was cited as "high-performing" by US News and World Report in its 2025–26 rankings of the best hospitals.

For more than 100 years, UI urologists have developed innovative techniques and technologies that improve the health of Iowans, expand the frontiers of medicine, and train new generations of talented physicians.

School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The University of Iowa School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability (SEES) combined the former Departments of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences (GSS) and Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES), with the Environmental Sciences Program. The school, which launched in July 2025, offers an integrated approach with natural science and social science majors in one place, making it easier for students to explore the issues from different disciplinary lenses and discover the academic and career path that is right for them.

The University of Iowa Department of Surgery combines leading-edge techniques with a patient-centered approach—treating complex conditions with precision, compassion, and collaboration. From lifesaving procedures to highly specialized care, the department is built to meet the most complex surgical needs.

Department of Biostatistics

College of Public Health

The Department of Biostatistics offers students an exciting way to combine mathematical, statistical, and biological interests to contribute to important research that improves lives. Iowa’s biostatistics programs provide a balance of statistical theory and application. The MS prepares students in the design of experiments and analysis of data in biomedical and public health programs. The MPH provides fundamental training in public health sciences along with core biostatistical theory and methods. The PhD emphasizes developing and applying statistical methodology to solve important biological and public health problems.

College of Pharmacy

Since 1885, the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, one of the most highly regarded programs in the country, has maintained an unsurpassed commitment to educate and train the highest quality pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. The PharmD program has a strong grounding in science and evidence-based practice, exploration of career choices through required and elective courses, and exposure to leadership opportunities. The program synthesizes basic scientific principles and practice through caring and communication in an integrated professional program. In addition to the PharmD degree, students may specialize with a professional Certificate in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care, a combined Doctor of Pharmacy/MPH degree, or Doctor of Pharmacy/MS in informatics degree.

School of Journalism and Mass Communication

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Established in 1924, the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication has long been recognized as a leader in journalism education. The school has produced thousands of distinguished graduates, and some have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes, Peabody Awards, and Emmy Awards. The undergraduate program prepares students for dynamic careers in many traditional and new fields—working in media industries, or in other industries but within communications, and as entrepreneurs.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication also offers a master’s degree in mass communication, a master's degree in strategic communication, and a PhD in mass communication.
